Immigration building icon to be replaced

Emilio González, the nation's top immigration services official, announced on Friday that the old immigration building at Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 79th Street will soon be history.
Long an icon of frustration for South Florida immigrants, the fortress-like structure will be replaced by four new facilities: one in Broward and three in Miami-Dade -- all scheduled to open by the fall of 2008.
González made the announcement in a speech inside the Freedom Tower, where thousands of Cuban refugees were processed in the 1960s. He, too, was a Cuban refugee but his family settled in Tampa.
González originally disclosed the move at a news conference in Miami on Oct. 27, but had not disclosed the locations of the new facilities. On Friday, he provided artist renderings of the new offices and their planned locations:
• The Broward County field office will be at an intersection halfway between Interstate 95 and Florida's Turnpike in Oakland Park.
• The Miami field office will be halfway between I-95 exits 7 and 8A on Northwest 7th Avenue.
• The Hialeah field office will be near the intersection of Miami Gardens Drive and Northwest 59th Avenue.
• The Kendall field office will be at the corner of Southwest 120th Street and 147th Avenue.
González said the four facilities will serve as models for others to be built across the country over the next few years -- part of a strategy to modernize the immigration agency.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., who attended González's announcement, said she recalled receiving food rations at the Freedom Tower as a Cuban refugee in 1960 when she was 8 years old.
'I remember this awesome, elaborate, ornate building and I thought `this must be a palace,' '' Ros-Lehtinen said after the ceremony. ``There were hundreds of thousands of us going through this building and I remember the bags of powdered milk and the American cheese.''
Ros-Lehtinen later got a green card and became a citizen at age 20. In 1989, she was the first Cuban American elected to Congress.
