MIAMI (WSVN) -- A year after his donor was denied access to the United States, a man in desperate need of a kidney transplant is finally receiving his life-saving surgery.
Paul Lugo, 34, has been dealing with kidney disease for almost a decade. "I have been getting real sick lately. I've been in and out of the hospital," said Lugo in May of 2006.
Finally, about a year ago, he found a relative in Colombia who was a donor match and agreed to give him one of her kidneys.
Then, the U.S. Government told Lugo they would not let his donor into the country. "It's making me cry. It really hurts because it's, it's like you see the light at the end of the tunnel, and they just take it away from you," said Lugo last year after hearing the disappointing news. "Basically, what they're saying is they'd rather me die and wait for somebody on the list than let somebody in from another country to help me."
Lugo reached out to 7 News who got him in touch with congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. She helped him get through the necessary paperwork, and, eventually, after getting it to the right people, everything was approved. "I tried to do it myself, and it took me three years just to get the application through," he said. "Through Channel 7, it took about one year to facilitate my donor to get here."
Tuesday night Lugo was admitted to Jackson Memorial Hospital. After a five-hour surgery Wednesday morning, one of his cousin's kidneys was successfully transplanted into his body.
Doctors at JMH say it is crucial that people in need of transplant get living donors. "Living donation is very important because not only does it provide a kidney transplant for Paul, but it also saves someone else's life because it frees up a donor," said Dr. Linda Chin.
Lugo now has a message out there for other people waiting for vital organ transplants: "And I just want to let people know there is hope out there, and there is help out there. If you need help, all you have to do is ask for it," he said. "Thanks, Channel 7, and keep on doing the good work."
